Florida law (316.126) requires that motorists immediately proceed to a position parallel to, and as close as reasonable to the closest edge of the curb of the roadway, clear of any intersection and shall stop and remain in position until the authorized emergency vehicle has passed, unless otherwise directed by any law enforcement officer."
The Blackman Fire District conducts mutual aid operations with neighboring departments. Due to being a volunteer department, many of the personnel work day jobs that leave the district low on responders. The purpose of mutual aid agreements are to provide persons in need of help, the most expedient service available by the closest available unit, regardless of which agency is represented.
It is our mission to protect life and property within our Blackman Community and surrounding areas. Majority of the volunteers unfortunately live out of district, but can be on standby at anytime. The department has three vehicles that are considered Quick Response and Command vehicles. Whenever a responder is going to be in district, it is our recommendation they take their department vehicle in an effort to respond quicker to calls for service, but we do have strict policies that govern passengers in department vehicles.
If a department member is conducting department business in the area, they are allowed to stop to eat or pick up items along the way. Since the department does not pay volunteers to do the additional business necessary to run a department, it is only reasonable to allow them this opportunity while out conducting business. If a volunteer conducts the department business, then has to return home only to leave again in their personal vehicle to go back to town to get something, we are essentially shorting our district the ability to respond when a call comes out.
One of the hardest things for first responders is managing all the different aspects of keeping up with department needs on top of responding to calls and keeping up with training. The department can always use support staff members to help fill in the gaps and bring their expertise to assist in day to day functions. As a support staff member, you will be affiliated with the Blackman Volunteer Firefighter Association which focuses on firefighter needs, fundraising and community education events. Support staff are not required to attend Thursday training nights either. We also appreciate those willing to donate their time to helping us fix things around the department, whether you are an electrician, plumber or something else, we will welcome you with open arms.
Smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. Check the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific model.
Install carbon monoxide detectors on every floor of your home and near sleeping areas. Have your heating system, water heater, and any other gas or oil appliances serviced annually by a qualified technician.
